From the year 2015 to 2019, my research found that most beverage stores carry more sugar-sweetened beverages than bottled water. During the same period, cases of diabetes increased.

In 2009, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Prior to the diagnosis, I consumed excess amounts of refined sugar products. My blood sugar level was 21.7 millimoles/L—a life-threatening quantity.  Following the norm, I managed the condition. I then read the research findings of Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton of Oxford University. According to her, after giving birth, she was unable to lose the weight she had gained during her pregnancy. Through her research, she learned that the meat she had been eating contained obesogens, which are toxic chemicals that cause weight gain and are found in many foods.

Armed with that information, I began to research the causes of type 2 diabetes. My research showed that type 2 diabetes commonly occurs when one consumes an excess amount of food products containing refined sugar—particularly sweetened beverages—over a prolonged period, until there is a build-up of sugar inside the body. With type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin; however, the amount is not sufficient for absorbtion of the excess sugar. Some of the sugar finds its way into the bloodstream where it converts into fat. Some of the fat coats the red blood cells, therefore, preventing them from absorbing the sugar and transporting it to the muscles to be used for energy. At that stage, the person is insulin-resistant. The excess sugar inside the body begins attacking the nerves and internal organs, causing damage to the heart, kidneys, eyes, and more.

With assistance and advice from, Dr. H. Robinson, Dr. Allan, and Dr Chen, I put together a diet, exercise, and vitamin therapy program which I first tested on myself while managing my diabetes.

The three-part program consisted of:

  1. A menu cycle: A low-carbohydrate menu to facilitate weight loss and decrease fat storage.
  2. Diabetic exercise: Exercise designed to facilitate the burning off of the excess sugar in the body and the fat coating the red blood cells.
  3. Vitamins: A diabetic body does not absorb enough nutrients and requires vitamin supplementation.


While testing the above methodology, by day 17, I noticed an increase in energy. Two days after, I had a surge of energy, which led to Dr. Robinson to request a blood glucose test. The results showed that my A1C had dropped from 14.2 to 5.5, my fasting glucose level had dropped from 21.8 to 6.2 millimoles, my blood pressure had normalized, and my weight had dropped from 219 to 185 pounds. This was my direct evidence that type 2 diabetes and obesity can be reversed.

What happens?

After burning off excess body fat through diet, exercise, and vitamin therapy, the thin layer of fat coating the red blood cells begins to burn off. Once the red blood cells are exposed, they can, again, properly absorb sugar and transport it to the muscles.

Example 1: In 2016, I received a call from a man who told me his doctor had informed him that he had not more than six months to live. I can imagine how he must have felt. He pleaded with me asking if there was anything I could do to help him reverse his now-too-advanced diabetes. He had been depending on his diabetes drugs for managing his condition. He was an amputee and partly blind. There was nothing I could do to help him. His condition could have reversed and cured earlier, while he was managing the diabetes.

Example 2: In this example, the victim would not listen to advice. He drank a bottle of cola each day. His feet were swollen. He needed injections in his eyes from time to time due to sugar buildup in them. He had put his trust in diabetes drugs to save him, but experienced the opposite.

Type 2 diabetes is a curable condition. If ignored, it is a progressive condition that can reach a stage where manual insulin injections are required. Most victims of type 2 diabetes are not informed of this.

Managing type 2 diabetes as the only treatment is a song sung repeatedly to convince diabetics to manage their condition. Type 2 diabetes is managed through the use of prescription drugs. What is type 2 diabetes?

A form of sugar called glucose is meant to reach the cells in the body in order to give the body energy. This sugar is then burnt up by the activity of the muscles. The condition where this process is first disrupted in called pre-diabetes. If nothing is done to prevent its progression, the pre-diabetes progresses to type 2 diabetes. My own research, along with research by done by others, confirms this fact. Type 2 diabetes does not happen overnight. It takes several years to develop. Over the years, as you consume refined sugar in excess, by your mid-forties, there is a sugar build-up inside your body. As mentioned, your pancreas still works; however, because there is too much sugar in your body, some of that sugar, in liquid form, finds its way into your bloodstream. What happens when we eat sugar and fail to burn it off? It turns into—you guessed it—fat. Some of the excess sugar finds its way into your bloodstream where it converts into fat. The fat coats your blood cells, so even though your pancreas is secreting insulin and the insulin is transporting sugar to your bloodstream, your blood cells are not able to absorb the sugar because they are coated with fat. When the food scientist handed in his article, the diabetes drug manufacturer declined to publish it saying that if diabetics found out they could cure their condition, they would not buy their drugs.

Research shows that excess consumption of carbohydrates may lead to weight gain in the form of fat. Fat is a solid mass that does not move around inside your body.

Chocolate is bitter, and so to make chocolates or chocolate cake, a huge quantity of sugar is needed. To make a chocolate cake, enough sugar has to be added to balance out the bitterness and more has to be added to sweeten the cake mix. Simply, take refined sugar food products out of your diet.
  2. Exercise: You can never underestimate the role of exercise. I realize many people don’t like to exercise. Many adults tell me this. Here is a reason why you should exercise regardless of your age. Exercise is a most powerful medicine to help reverse and cure type 2 diabetes. It also reduces your chances of getting heart disease, stroke, kidney failure will all go away. Start slowly and work your way up. The secret is that the exercise must be conducted the correct way or it will yield no benefit to you.

If you are already a diabetic, your doctor will have prescribed a drug to help lower your blood sugar. This is done to prevent you from ending up in the hospital.  But if you follow the above two steps properly, your doctor will eventually be able to take you off your diabetes drugs.

How is diabetes reversed?

As a diabetes researcher and lifestyle strategist, my research has shown that pre-diabetes can be reversed and type 2 diabetes can go into remission by using a three-pronged approach. This includes:

  1. A low-calorie diabetes diet: This facilitates weight loss.
  2. Exercise for diabetics: Exercise designed for diabetics facilitates the burning off of excess sugar buildup in the body, plus, it helps you achieve weight loss. Once sugar has been burnt off, the body turns to fat for energy. The first of the fat to burn off is the thin layer coating the red blood cells. Once that layer of fat is burned off, red blood cells responsible for carrying sugar to the muscles to be used for energy are exposed and begin to absorb sugar and transport it to the muscles. The cells, which had become insulin-resistant, are restored to insulin-sensitivity. The diabetes is then in remission.
  3. Vitamins: A diabetic often requires vitamin supplementation. Vitamin supplementation can speed up the effectiveness of the above two methods.

If you ask most experienced medical doctors, they will tell you that pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes can be reversed and there is evidence backing that up. In fact, the International Diabetes Federation’s stated mission is to promote diabetes care and cure worldwide.

Keto Diet for Diabetics

Keto diet is a popular short term for the ketogenic diet. Keto diet is designed to help the dieter reach a point of ketosis, which facilitates weight loss. Unlike with the vegan diet, keto diet incorporates the eating of meat. Depending on which keto diet you look at, the structure of the diet will vary depending on whether it includes eating some starches or not. But is keto diet good for diabetics? The answer is the focus of this article.

 Keto diet and ketosis

 Keto diet forces your body to use sugar for energy until all the sugar is burnt off. Once the sugar is burnt off, your body turns to fat for energy and begins to burn that off. It is at that point that you have reached ketosis. Keto diet includes low-carb to no-carb dishes and allows for moderate to high-protein consumption with the aim of reaching ketosis.

Is keto diet good for diabetics?

 When it comes to diabetes, any diet that facilitates burning sugar and fat is good. In the case of using keto diet for the treatment of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, for fast results, it is recommended that exercise designed for pre-diabetics and type 2 diabetics is included in the program. Many studies have found that this combination—of keto diet and specialized exercise—can bring about desired results in a short time. While keto diet helps with weight loss, when coupled with exercise, the benefits go beyond that, such as lowering the chances of type 2 diabetes progressing to type 1. Keto diet along with specialized exercise also helps the diabetic reduce his/her chances of encountering:

  • Kidney failure
  • Limb amputation
  • Blindness

Is keto diet right for me?

 Is keto diet right for you? The safest thing is to simply ask your doctor, particularly if you are type 2 diabetic and also taking cholesterol medication or medication for high blood pressure. Both high cholesterol and high blood pressure can be reduced by healthy eating and exercise, but it is always advisable to consult a medical professional before starting a program.

What to eat on a keto diet?

As I mentioned earlier, a keto diet can include carbs, if you prefer to have them. Rather than be bogged down by calorie-counting, you can eat things like this:

  • 4 ounces of meat per meal
  • 1 cup cooked grained rice
  • 2 cups cooked vegetables
  • Tofu and cabbage soup
  • Stir-fried vegetables
  • Baked chicken breast with salad and mixed vegetable
  • Salads are good and so are cooked beans of any type

What not to eat when on keto diet

What foods should you avoid when on a keto diet? It has been mentioned that ketosis is the point where you have used up all the sugar in your body and it turns to burning fat for energy. To achieve this, you should avoid having these things:

  • Foods made with refined sugar
  • Processed foods
  • Tropical fruits, such as bananas, mangoes, pineapple, etc.
  • Foods high in calories, like pizza
  • Large portions of pasta
  • Large portions of lasagna
  • Candies, cookies, and chocolate bars
  • Soft drinks of all kinds
  • Sweetened milk products

Can keto diet help reverse type 2 diabetes?

Studies have shown that people following a keto diet and exercise have been successful in reversing their type 2 diabetes. I am one of those success stories. This means I have direct experience and knowledge of the effectiveness of this diet.

Reward yourself

Once you have achieved success in the reversal of your diabetes, you may have your favourite dessert once a week, as a reward. This will not cause your diabetes to return. You can even give yourself a memorable gift—something to remind you of what you have accomplished. A gift will make you feel fulfilled. Your brain will release endorphins that will bring you joy for what you have accomplished. Additionally, once you have reached your goal, while you are still on keto diet, you may reintroduce your favourite foods in small amounts, but only have them from time to time. Small amounts means not eating these foods in the same quality that brought on your diabetic condition in the first place; otherwise, you will find yourself diabetic all over again. That can lead to disappointment, which can lead to discouragement.

Tips for getting into keto mode

  1. Cut down on carbohydrates. If you are a type 2diabetic, I highly recommend that you eliminate carbs, such as rice, pasta, lasagna, refined sugar, etc. There is a reason for that. When I was diagnosed and began to research how to reverse my diabetes, I tried several programs to cure myself, but they failed. I traced the failure to consumption of carbs. Once I deleted the carbs from my diet, I saw success in 21 days.
  2. All the meals you eat must include fat to help with digestion. The fat can be olive oil. For example, if I have a bowl of salad with vegetables and baked salmon, I will blend tomatoes with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and use that as a dressing.
  3. Don’t starve yourself under any condition. Eat about six meals a day. Your first meal should be eaten within two hours of waking up.
  4. Your last meal should be eaten at least two hours before going to sleep to prevent your blood sugar level from spiking.
  5. Don’t give up if things are not going the way you want in the beginning. I tried a few times before I was able to create a formula that worked for me.
  6. Don’t measure how many grams of meat or vegetables you eat. The more time you spend trying to follow grams of protein per meal in comparison to your body weight, the more likely you are to get frustrated and give up. Keep it simple. Some doctors claim that you should be counting grams of this and grams of that. You are not doing bodybuilding. You are on keto diet.
  7. Don’t forget to exercise. The exercise in conjunction with keto diet will do miracles for you. If you are not used to doing exercise, start slowly, like I did. When I first started, I lasted only seven minutes on a cardio machine. It was not long before I was able to stay on it for 45 minutes at a time.

Does sugar cause type 2 diabetes

Sugar is the main cause of type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes. Several diabetes researches support this claim. According to Dr. Sanjay Basu Ph.D., an Epidemiologist from Stanford University who was cited in the Stanford Medicine newsletter in an article written by Digitale (2013): “Researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine, the University of California-Berkley, and the University of California-San Francisco examined data on sugar availability and diabetes rates from 175 countries over the past decade. After counting for obesity and a large array of other factors, the researchers found that increased sugar in a population’s food supply was linked to higher diabetes rates, independent of obesity rates. Their study was published in Feb. 27 in PLOS ONE.”

Evidence is everything. So far, no research from anywhere in the world has found that pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes are not caused by the overconsumption of refined sugar.

About sugar

Sugar is a crystalline substance made of sucrose, found in food, particularly fruits. Sugar is not found in a natural form in most manufactured beverages, such as cola drinks, or processed foods, where sugar is added as a preservative. Manufacturers of snacks, such as chips, use sugar, salt, and fat to give their product a taste that pleases the brain.

Types of sugar:

Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are created in a lab and have no health benefits. In 2019, in Canadian health news, it was reported that artificial sweeteners actually cause diabetes. For decades, beverage companies have denied that refined sugar causes type 2 diabetes.

Refined sugar

Refined sugar is produced by extracting juice from sugar cane. The liquid is then processed into the refined sugar that we put in coffee, tea, baked goods, beverages, and in some processed foods as a preservative.


Brown Sugar

Brown sugar is refined sugar with molasses added to give it its brown color. It has the same effect on the body as refined sugar.


Honey is a liquid sweetener produced by bees. In ancient times, honey was eaten raw. In many cultures, raw honey is still eaten. It comes in the form a thick, white substance. There is not enough research to determine if honey causes diabetes or not. The secret is to play it safe, if you are diabetic, and avoid honey and sugar.

Corn syrup

Corn syrup is artificial sugar made from corn. Research has shown that corn syrup with added sugar is linked to several health problems, including diabetes, and is made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose. Glucose is transported to your body and used as fuel for your body. Fructose from corn syrup is stored in your liver and causes weight gain.

How does sugar cause type 2 diabetes?

Pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes commonly occur when one consumes an excess amount of refined sugar, including artificial sweeteners, over an extended period of time. This causes a buildup of sugar inside the body. Unlike type 1 diabetes, where the pancreas produces very little or no insulin, with type 2 diabetes, the pancreas still functions and produces an adequate amount of insulin. However, when there is a buildup of sugar inside the body, some of that sugar finds its way into the blood stream where it converts into fat. Some of the fat coats the red blood cells preventing them from absorbing the sugar and transporting it to the muscles where it would normally be used for energy. When the blood cells are unable to absorb the sugar buildup, the sugar begins to spread through the entire body, including in the internal organs, and the eyes and nerves. This is where the victim has moved from the pre-diabetic stage to the insulin-resistant stage, also known as full-blown type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition that starts from pre-diabetes and develops into full-blown diabetes.

Types of diabetes

Recently, several types of diabetes have been talked about, including diabetes neuropathy and others; however, there are two basic types of diabetes. They are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

With type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not secrete insulin; thus, the diabetic has to inject insulin manually.

Type 2 diabetes

There are two main types of type 2 diabetes: hereditary and non-hereditary.

Hereditary type 2 diabetes means the disease was passed on from a parent, grandparent, or even great grandparent. However, not everyone in the family will acquire the condition.

Non-hereditary type 2 diabetes is also known as adult-onset diabetes, which means, the afflicted is diagnosed as an adult, generally in their mid-forties. But recent research has found that children as young as 12 years are being diagnosed with the condition.

Some research has linked the increase of type 2 diabetes to increased availability of sugar-sweetened beverages. For example, in many developing countries where cases of type 2 diabetes were very rare, with sugar-sweetened beverages becoming more available, so too has type 2 diabetes been on the increase increase.

If I have type 2 diabetes, can I eat sugar?

If you have type 2 diabetes, it is not a good idea to consume sugar at all. The diabetes is caused by sugar buildup. Eating more sugar will increase your risk of going into cardiac arrest. When I was diagnosed back in 2009, there was so much sugar buildup in my body that it had begun to exit from the corners of my eyes and from my tongue as sticky, white substance. The medical professional who treated me told me that I was steps away from going into cardiac arrest. He explained that he was surprised that the diabetes or the sugar buildup had not killed me.

Should I stop eating sugar completely?

Sugar is very addictive, even more addictive than cocaine, which makes it difficult to stop eating. It is not possible to stop eating sugar completely. Many of the foods you eat contain sugar, even vegetables. The human brain uses sugar, about 1 teaspoon a day, as fuel, in order to function properly. Your muscles also require sugar for energy that fuels your body. However, the amount of sugar the brain and muscles require is available in the unprocessed food you eat. I recommend that diabetics take steps to reverse their condition first, including stopping to eat refined sugar. Then they may re-introduce sugar into their diet, but in moderation, or else the diabetes will return. Once the diabetes has been reversed, one must remember how they became diabetic in the first place and not follow the same trajectory. For instance, after dinner, instead of having cookies for dessert, have fruit that is low in sugar, such as strawberries or blueberries.

How can I tell from a label if there is sugar in a product?

Try to cook your own food as much as you can. This way you have complete control of what you are putting in your stomach. However, it is not always possible to cook your own meals. If you are buying premade food, you can go online and research what you are be buying. If you are buying canned food, read the food label. Canned food products list the ingredients starting with what that which is the greatest quantity down to the least. Many canned foods, including beverages, list some of the ingredients using scientific terminology, which the average person may not understand. The rule of thumb is, if you are not familiar with the ingredient listed on a food product, whether it is canned or frozen, don’t eat it.

How much sugar should I be eating?

We all should be cutting down our sugar intake. The maximum recommended daily amount is 30g for adults, which works out to just seven teaspoons a day. Given that a tablespoon of ketchup contains around one teaspoon of sugar, a chocolate biscuit has up to two, and a small serving of baked beans almost three, you can see how quickly the teaspoons add up.

How can I reduce my sugar intake?

As just indicated, there is a lot od sugar in many of the foods you buy. Having said that, there are steps you can take to reduce your sugar intake.  Here is a list of common names for sugar that you might find on food labels:

  • Refined sugar
  • Sucrose
  • Glucose
  • Honey
  • Corn syrup
  • Dextrose
  • Fructose

By not eating food containing these refined sugar products, including artificial sweeteners, you improve your health significantly. These foods include:

  • Candy bars
  • Cookies
  • Cola drinks
  • Sweetened fruit beverages
  • Chocolate bars with caramel (caramel is melted sugar with a little whipping cream)
  • Sweetened milk
  • Heavily sweetened chocolate milk

Find a replacement for all these sweet snacks. I replaced cookies with vegetable crackers, and to my surprise, they taste great. DO NOT REPLACE SUAGR WITH ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERS.

Should I be managing my diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is managed with pharmaceutical drugs. The mains purpose of these drugs is for you, the diabetic, to be able to continue eating sugar. But it is the sugar that caused the diabetes in the first place, thus, it defeats the purpose to keep eating it.

Diabetes Awareness Month: What Your Doctor Didn’t Tell You

November 14th is World Diabetes Day and November is Diabetes Awareness Month. How well informed are you about how type 2 diabetes can be reversed and put into permanent remission?

In 2009, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. For the first two years, I, like most type 2 diabetics, managed the condition by taking drugs, as recommended by my doctor.

Two years after my diagnosis, I learned that type 2 diabetes could be reversed and even cured. This revelation took place when I visited my doctor, one day, and asked him point blank, “Dr. Robinson, can type 2 diabetes be cured?”
“Yes, it can—by using several approaches all working together.” he replied.
I was absolutely floored.

Why do medical doctors not inform their patients of this fact at the time of diagnosis? Firstly, it is not the medical doctor’s responsibility to inform his or her patient that diabetes can be cured.

Secondly, according to the doctors I have spoken with, they say they are under the impression that the possibility of a patient being able to reverse and cure their type 2 diabetes is common knowledge. (Furthermore, a medical doctor’s responsibility is to prescribe the medicines they were trained to prescribe according to the ailment.)

Thirdly, diabetes drug manufacturers know that diabetes can be cured but they do not make this information available to the public.

There are two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

With type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone which allows sugar to enter the cells to produce energy. Resultantly, the patient requires insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes has two causes:

  1. Hereditary inheritance: (This is the cause for approximately 5% of all cases of type 2 diabetes).
  2. Lifestyle choices: (This is the cause for approximately 95% of all cases of type 2 diabetes).

Insofar as type 2 diabetes caused by lifestyle choices is concerned, according to Dr. Sanjay Basu, Ph.D., of Stanford University, excess sugar consumption is the primary contributing factor. This is what happens:

  • The excess sugar finds its way into the blood stream where it converts into fat.
  • Fat coats the cells preventing them from absorbing the sugar and producing energy to be used in the muscles.
  • Mostly commonly, patients are guided to manage their diabetes through the use of drugs. This means that the patient will always remain a diabetic.
  • The purpose of type 2 diabetes drugs is to allow the diabetic to continue to consume refined sugar and processed foods (the main causes to the condition, in the first place).
  • This also causes the diabetic to remain a diabetic, according to nutrition specialists, such as Dr. Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

In 2012, when my doctor told me that type 2 diabetes could be reversed, I began working with several doctors and discovered a 3-step approach that incorporates three cure methods that work together to bring about reversal and a cure. That is what cured me of diabetes. How I accomplished this was featured in WebMD Diabetes, fall 2016 issue, page 19.

In March 2017, Dr. Natalia McInnes of McMaster University, (who specializes in the reversal of type 2 diabetes), confirmed through her research that diabetes can reversed and even cured within a four–month period.

The differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

There are differences between type 1 and 2 diabetes; however, the signs and symptoms are almost identical. Most type 2 diabetics are diagnosed in their mid-forties. Most type 1 diabetics are diagnosed as children. Though the two types of diabetes have almost identical signs and symptoms, the conditions are not the same.

Ten percent of all cases of diabetes are type 1. The remaining 90% are type 2. Some type 2 and type 1 diabetes cases are hereditary, meaning the diabetes runs in the blood line. However, this does not mean the entire family line will have the condition. In most cases of hereditary diabetes, the condition appears randomly in a family line.

Here are some common differences between the two types of diabetes.

Differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Type 1 Type 2
What happens inside your body The pancreas does not secrete insulin responsible for transporting sugar to the blood cells. The pancreas still works and secretes sufficient insulin to transport sugar to the blood cells.
What are the risk factors/causes? Cows’ milk can cause an immune reaction in children leading to type 1 diabetes. Both weight and ethnicity are not risk factors. Research shows that the main cause of type 2 diabetes is overconsumption of refined sugar.
Cure Type 1 diabetes cannot be cured. There is no known cure so far. Type 2 diabetes can be reversed and cured, research shows.


Type 1 diabetes is managed through manual insulin injections. Traditionally, type 2 diabetes is managed through medication. Some doctors now say it can be managed with diet.
Preventive Action Because research has found that cows’ milk can be a cause of type 1 diabetes, for its prevention, do not feed cow’s milk to a child. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices.

Difference in risk factors between Type 1 and Type 2

Type 1

There is not a lot of information on the risk factors in respect to type 1 diabetes. As shown in the chart above, the only known risk factor is in relation to children. Researchers points to the feeding of cow’s milk to children as posing a risk of the child becoming a type 1 diabetic. Otherwise, lifestyle is not a risk factor/cause in the case of type 1 diabetes.

Some adults in their forties are now beginning to be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This maybe due to the fact that type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition that progresses to type 1 diabetes.

Type 2

It was long believed that diabetes was common within certain ethnicities, particularly amongst African Americans (blacks), Native Americans, Asians, and people of Hispanic background. Recent research has shown that no one race is more at a high risk of developing diabetes than any other.

You can also acquire type 2 diabetes hereditarily. It won’t necessarily come from your parents; it could be that one of your grandparents had it, or even an aunt or uncle. This means it is in the family line and can also appear randomly, as with type 1.

Type 2 diabetes is most commonly developed in adulthood, although it can also occur in childhood. Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be managed with healthy eating and regular exercise alone, but may also require medications or insulin therapy.

Pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes

Pre-diabetes can lead to full-blown type 2 diabetes, which is one of the leading causes of early death worldwide. In undeveloped nations where there is less information about the causes of pre-diabetes and the ensuing type 2 diabetes, the condition is killing thousands of people each year. In the United States, 11% of the population is diabetic. There are over 70 million more people who are pre-diabetic and don’t even know it, according to the American Diabetes Association.

In the United States, pre-diabetes and full-blown type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. Let’s look at California, for example. A UCLA study showed that in California alone, 13 million adults are pre-diabetic and 2.5 million, (or 9% of the population,) is type 2 diabetic. The research also showed that the two groups represent 15.5 million people (55 percent of the state’s population). Apply this equation to the entire United States and other countries, and the figures becomes staggering. For example, there are 60 million diabetics in India alone. This means there are likely over 200 million people in that country who don’t know they are pre-diabetic. The same research found that 30% of pre-diabetics will acquire full-blown type 2 diabetes within five years of their diagnosis and the remaining 70% will develop it at some point in their lifetime. When people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, some go into denial, followed by self-disappointment and sometimes anger. In a rush to find a solution, they become susceptible to misleading information that leads many of the newly-diagnosed to make decisions which, unbeknownst to them, allows for the progression of the diabetes, eventually resulting in heart disease, kidney failure, limb amputation, and even early death by stroke. In Canada, 9% of the population is diabetic and 4 out of 5 Canadians are at risk of becoming type 2 diabetic mainly because of their lifestyle choices.

Symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes

The reason so many people are pre-diabetic and don’t know it is mainly due to the fact that the symptoms are not obvious. The most easily detectable symptom is the craving for sugar. When one actually becomes diabetic, they experience the below symptoms:

  • A strong craving for something sweet
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal
  • Blurred vision, indicating the blood sugar level is low
  • Feeling tied
  • Lack of strength
  • Frequent urination

Experiencing just one of the above noted symptoms does not mean you have become diabetic. For example, craving sugar might mean you are pre-diabetic, while frequent urination might mean a prostate problem or a disease affecting the urinary tract. Oncoming diabetes will cause all or most of the above symptoms. If you begin to experience any of them, see a doctor.

Managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes

The question to begin with is whether type 1 and type 2 diabetes be managed? The answer depends on which medical professional you speak with. There is trend that recently has begun in the United States that many physicians have signed onto. It is known as Lifestyle Medicine—the application of healthy eating to allow the body to heal itself. This new lifestyle approach to living healthy is gaining momentum in the medical field. As a lifestyle strategist who once almost lost his life to type 2 diabetes and being overweight, my research, which saved my life, showed that you can significantly alter your lifestyle by making simple changes. Essentially, this method is the same as the one used to reverse type 2 diabetes. Although type 1 diabetes has to be managed, type 2, on the other hand, can be reversed and cured through lifestyle changes. Some simple lifestyle changes are as follows:

  • Eating a low-calorie diet: this facilitates weight loss.
  • Utilizing exercise designed for pre-diabetics and type 2 diabetics
  • Including the keto diet as part of your meal plan

The above three simple steps, if used together concurrently, effect burning off the excess sugar in the body. Once the sugar has been burnt off, the diabetic body turns to body fat for energy. This is what is known as ketosis. The point at which the body has no option but to use fat for energy leads to a speedy reversal of pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. The abovementioned steps work miracles for people who are overweight or obese.

Emotional impact of type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Diabetes has a psychological impact, not just on the victim, but on the victim’s family as well. When a victim is first diagnosed, he or she often experiences shock followed by denial. I went through this experience and understand how it feels.

Slowly, reality sets in. One may even cry a little and feel disappointed for allowing themselves to have become diabetic. As a man, I felt diminished. These are normal human feelings. Living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes can sometimes be overwhelming. When I was diagnosed, and was dealing with the emotional reactions, I talked with friends about my experience with the condition. Family and friends are normally very sympathetic.

Can type 1 and type 2 diabetes be cured or prevented?

Unfortunately, there’s currently no permanent cure for Type 1 diabetes. However, there is a cure, or what some refer to as remission, for type 2 diabetes, and these results are evidence-based. The man accredited as the father of Mathematics, Ibn al Haytham, also known as Al Hazeen, taught his students about the importance of evidence-based conclusions. After consulting with my doctor and several health care practitioners, I carried out my own research and experimentation. With their knowledge and inspiration at my back, I was determined to achieve weight-loss and reverse my type 2 diabetes. The development of my three-pronged approach allowed me to achieve my goals in only three weeks. This became my direct evidence that tackling the problem of excess sugar in the body plus effecting weight loss can produce the reversal of T2DM. In 2009, when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I had a blood sugar level of 21.7 millimoles/L—a life-threatening quantity. After three weeks on my program, my blood sugar level was normal. Food As Medicine for Diabetics: A Diabetic’s Guide to Healthy Living

 Food as medicine is becoming popular as many people are refraining from eating red meat, and, particularly, refined sugar and sweetened beverages of all kind. Even the largest soda company has released a new cola drink using stevia as sweetener instead of the traditional refined sugar. A number of years ago, an organization was founded in the United States which uses food as medicine. Shortly after, many physicians joined this organization. Its representatives travel around the United State conducting conferences. Many doctors who have attended their conferences have sworn that they will begin to use food as medicine to treat their patients.

The human body is perfectly designed with the ability to repair itself. No creation of man could and will ever achieve that. When the body is given what it needs, it will not just grow strong and healthy, but is able to heal itself from many diseases. Just as the human body is able to heal it when it is fed what it needs, when the wrong foods are fed to the body, it is rendered unable to heal itself.  The question is now: If you are a type 2 diabetic, what should you eat?

What should diabetics eat?

First, it worth knowing what causes type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is caused by too much refined sugar built up inside the body. It was developed with the same type of strategy that the tobacco companies used: They denied that their product was injurious to the health. Such a strategy is designed to confuse people, but further, it is designed to keep people hooked on a product. So is the case with diabetes treatment. The strategy is to mislead and confuse people and have them believe that type 2 diabetes cannot be cured and that it has to be managed. Thus, diabetics spend the rest of their lives managing the condition.

What foods are considered medicine for diabetics?


Spinach is considered a superfood because of its natural content. Spinach has one of the most important vitamins for diabetics, which is Vitamin B12, and other B vitamins. Why are these important?  The B vitamins help prevent nerve damage and also help repair them. It is not uncommon for a diabetic to develop nerve damage. If a nerve in your thigh gets damaged, the blood supply will not reach that area down to your knee area. When this happens, the flesh in this area collapses. Recovery can take a month or more.

Why specifically is Vitamin B12 most important?

Many diabetics who had their leg amputated were managing their condition.  Leg amputation generally occurs in type 2 diabetics when there is too much sugar buildup in the body that has been left untreated. The sugar damages the nerves in the leg until the nerves are destroyed. At that stage, not much can be done to save the leg. Healthy eating and including spinach in your diet is the key to protecting the nerves.

How to cook spinach: Spinach can be cooked in many ways. One way I like is to sauté it with onions and add it to whole wheat lasagna for a healthy meal. Spinach is often used in salad. If you are going to use it in a salad, you need to add some sort of acid, such as lemon or vinegar to help break down the spinach, otherwise, it will not be properly digested.


Rapini is a very small form of broccoli but has more green leaves. It is slightly bitter. It is known for its cancer-fighting properties. Rapini has calcium, thus, helps build strong bones. Rapini promotes proper digestion, which is very important for diabetics. In addition, it helps with vision improvement. Lack of proper vision is one of the medical problems faced by diabetics.

How to cook rapini: The method I use to cook rapini is simple. I slice an onion, heat olive oil, add the rapini to the hot oil, season it with salt and pepper, and that is it. It should not be overcooked.


Diabetes, or the sugar buildup inside your body, is known for doing more damage than attacking just the nerves. The sugar also attacks your internal organs, including the heart. This eventually may lead to stroke. Statistics show that one out of every two diabetics will die from a stroke. Salmon is great for protecting your heart because of its Omega 3 content.

Other fish that are high in fish oil (with Omega 3) include mackerel, but more particularly, sardines and anchovies. I cook my anchovies following a simple recipe.


  • Sliced onion
  • Diced garlic
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cooked pasta

I heat the oil, add the onion and cook until transparent. I add the garlic and reduce the heat so that I don’t burn the garlic, otherwise, it will become bitter and ruin the dish. When the garlic is partly cooked, I add the diced tomatoes and cook the mixture for a few minutes. I add the anchovies and then season because anchovies can be salty. Once I am pleased with the seasoning, I add the cooked pasta, mix it all together and check the seasoning again to make sure I like it. Wasn’t that easy and simple?

You can use food to reverse diabetes. Now what about the salmon? It’s very simple. Rub olive oil or avocado oil on the salmon, season it with salt and pepper and bake until done. A six-pounce salmon should be done in 7 minutes. The best salmon to use is Coho, Sockeye, Steal head, etc, but not Spring Salmon—the fattier the fish, the better. One of the techniques I use when I am sharing my cooking secrets is to tell how I became a chef. I experimented with a variety of ingredients.

You can top your sauteed rapini with the baked or pan-fried salmon. You can also use your spinach for salad and top it with pieces of baked salmon. What a healthy choice.


We cannot forget beets. Did you know that beets have some of the all the vitamins you need? They include all the B vitamins. Beets are good for protecting your heart, especially if you are prediabetic or type 2 diabetic. They also have fibre critical for helping reverse type 2 diabetes, according to the world-renowned food researcher and author of the book The China Study. This book has been described the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted, defining how diet and weight loss affect long-term health.

How to cook beets

I would discourage you from cooking your own beets. Beets take a long time to cook, cool down, peel, and then dice or slice. I recommend buying them unsweetened in can. They come diced or sliced. Add them to your salad or eat then as your vegetable with lunch or dinner.


Onions have been linked to reduced risk of cancer. They also help lower blood sugar and are loaded with micro-nutrients. To preserve all these nutrients, onions should be eaten raw.

Beet and onion salad

  • Sliced onions
  • Sliced beets
  • Salad dressing

Add all the above three ingredients in a bowl, then toss and season. This salad has more nutrition than most salads.

There are other superfoods that are medicine for diabetics. These include cooked beans. Beans neutralize sugar. Any type of canned beans will do.
